MALAYSIA Film Festival 21 (FFM21) received only 103 nominations, a drop from last year’s 117 films. There are five main categories — Feature Film, Digital Film, Animation, Short Film and Documentary.

1957 Hati Malaya, 9 September, Anak, Anak Halal, Apa Kata Hati, Sepi, Congkak, Duyung Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang, Susuk and Pensil are among the 23 feature films to be judged for the final five.

Muallaf, a movie by Yasmin Ahmad, was not submitted. The films nominated under the digital film category are Yantra, Ganavin Ivanthaanda Hero, Malaysia’s Sweetheart, Jarum Halus and Wirasiswi.

Besides that, 31 documentaries, 13 animation films and 31 short films have been submitted to contest in their respective categories.

FFM 21 will be going on road tours called Jom Meriahkan FFM21 before the start of the festival from Aug 7-9.
The road tour is aimed to create awareness about FFM 21 and to cultivate appreciation for local movies.

The road show started on July 6 at The Mines and will end its run at D Cruise Tasik, Putrajaya, on Aug 3.

Local celebrities such as the cast of I’m Not Single and Estet are tipped to take part in the event.

There will be 5, 000 free tickets to be given away through various channels.

“We will be having tickets giveaway through our official radio, Sinar FM and television channel, Astro Ria. We are giving opportunity to people to watch the films that are participating in FFM 21,” said chairman of Film Screening of FFM 21, Datuk Tengku Anuar Musadad.

All of the nominees in the feature film category will be screened for free except for Susuk, Wayang and Johnny Bikin Filem.

Catch the free screening at TGV KLCC, GSC Alamanda Putrajaya, and Cathay Cineleisure Damansara.

“Those who have obtained the free tickets can go to the nearest Pos Malaysia to get their seat numbers,” said Anuar.

Besides free movie screening, film symposium and the grand gala night, FFM21 will also be organising two movie premieres on Aug 7.

“We have not picked any titles at the moment,” he said.

Nevertheless, the committee of FFM21 is still keeping things under wraps including their panel of juries.

“We have already selected our panel of juries but we will not announce their names until further notice,” said chairman of participant and jury, Nancie Foo.

According to Foo, the method that will be used to judge the movies will be announced on July 28 and the list of shortlisted nominees will be made known on Aug 2.

FFM 21, which will be broadcast “live” over Astro Ria and Sinar FM, will also offer 13 premier awards, five jury special awards and 11 creative awards.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi is slated to attend the awards night at Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC) on Aug 9.
